9 work-from-home essentials

Due to the current situation in the world, many of us have to work from home. Unfortunately, no one knows how long the pandemic will last.

Moreover, there is a possibility that even after the pandemic, some of the companies will prefer their employees to continue working from home. That is why it is very important to have a comfortable and effective home setup. In this article, I want to tell you about the nine most essential items for every work-from-home office.

essentials

A stand up adjustable desk

This is the main item for any work-from-home setup. As you know, it is not very healthy if you sit too long every working day. So, a standing desk is a very good alternative as it may help decrease blood sugar levels, lower back pain caused by sitting, lower the risk of obesity and reduce the risk of heart disease.

However, even though standing has its advantages, standing all day can also lead to different problems. Ideally, you should move throughout the day, change your working position from standing to seated and back. An adjustable stand up desk is perfect for that. If you feel aches, fatigue or pain, it allows you to change the position quickly. An adjustable desk is the best investment for people working from home.

A height-adjustable, ergonomic chair

A good-quality chair is important as well. It should offer the necessary support and keep you comfortable for hours. Such chairs can be larger than ordinary office chairs and it is a benefit. Everyone has it is own areas of weakness in the body, so you should do research before buying a chair. All of them have different design and provide more comfort to different areas. Here are some features you should consider before purchasing one:

  • Lumbar support, you should choose a chair according to the curvature of your lower back
  • The wheels and a chairs’ base (should be swivel), can help prevent strain
  • The height and the arms rest adjustment, your feet should rest flat on the floor and arms should rest at a ninety-degree angle

A laptop

It gives you more flexibility than a PC. You can easily move and change position while working at home. You can also take it to a café, on travels and so on. Before purchasing a laptop, consider such specs as RAM and storage space. Think of what you need and choose the best option. If you work with graphics or videos, pick one with a good graphics card. If you travel a lot, go for a light ultraportable laptop.

A laptop stand

Another healthy option is a laptop stand. It will help you avoid posture problems, which usually lead to shoulder and neck pain. With a laptop stand, you can place the laptop screen at your eye level. This way, you don’t need to hunch forward and will naturally stay in a healthier upright position. If you keep your laptop on a flat surface, it may cause airflow problems. A laptop stand will help you avoid them as well.

Keyboard & mouse

If you get a laptop stand, you shouldn’t use the keyboard and touchpad on your laptop as it may damage your wrists. The most flexible options are wireless mouse and keyboard; however, you should always have batteries on hand. Before buying them, always consider the angle of the keyboard and the curvature of the mouse to avoid strain in the future.

High-speed internet

High-speed internet

This might be obvious, however, you often need a greater level of speed for work than for day-to-day internet surfing. When you work from home, you may need to have video conferences and calls with your clients and colleges or send large files back and forth. Sometimes it is worth upgrading to a faster package. You will save time and won’t feel embarrassed when losing connection again and again.

Task lighting

Proper lighting is important for the health of your eyes. This part of a work-from-home setup is often overlooked. Many people use only room lighting or work in darkness. If you have task lighting, you can direct the light anywhere you need. Improper lighting may lead to headaches and eye problems.

Office stationery

File cabinet

Sometimes just a clear desk is enough. However, if you have many documents and files, get a file cabinet. This way, you won’t get distracted and will be able to find any document much faster. There are many styles and designs, so you can easily find one that will look great with your other furniture.

Office stationery

Once you are working from home, it is worth getting an organizer and some stationery. Stationery is always cheaper if you buy it in bulk, so it is a great idea to stock up for weeks or even months. Just make up a checklist, get everything you need and you are set.
