When it comes to accessorizing office outfits, men don’t have a lot of options. Typical men’s accessories are watches, lapel pins, cufflinks and bracelets. However, a necktie is the most important one, it can either complement or ruin the whole look.
Ties are quite pricey, so you should be smart about your purchases. Always keep the rest of your wardrobe in mind and get a tie, which you will be able to combine with many outfits. In this article, I want to tell you more about the different versatile ties every gentleman should own.
Navy silk tie
A dark and simple tie. It is not flashy and goes very well with formal outfits. If you often wear solid suits, opt for a navy grenadine tie, which has a stronger texture. Such ties will always stand out even if the colour is not vivid. A navy silk tie is very versatile. If you are just starting out your collection, I recommend this one as your first purchase.
Burgundy tie
A burgundy tie is simple and versatile as well. Every man should have a solid colour tie in his wardrobe, so this is another recommendation for a basic tie collection. A burgundy tie is perfect for formal occasions and for some more casual events too.
Brown tie
You should opt for a textured tie because brown is a more casual colour. A brown grenadine tie is the best choice. A lighter brown shantung silk tie will go well with both business suits and sport coats because it is multifunctional and adds structure to your outfit. For colder seasons, get a brown wool tie.
Striped Repp tie
It is a classic tie, which has been popular for many decades. Striped Repp ties are easy to style and never go out of fashion, so you should definitely invest in one. They are casual, but still are formal enough for the office. Red or blue ties are great to start, but you should get whatever colour you like the most.
Shantung tie
Such ties are made of shantung silk, also known as raw silk, which features irregularities and knobs. Some people may think that these ties are defective. Nevertheless, true connoisseurs will easily recognize a real shantung, because it is matte and not shiny. A shantung tie looks more casual, you can get it in a solid colour, in stripes or other patterns.
Polka Dot Tie
The dot pattern is very simple, but also a staple, which has been around for decades. Such ties are absolutely appropriate for the office or job interviews. Small dots are more formal, whereas large dots are more casual. To start, I suggest you get something in between. The most versatile colours are also navy or red. However, depending on what shades you already have in your wardrobe; you might opt for a tie in light blue, medium blue, burgundy or orange.
Houndstooth Tie
This classic pattern has been popular for a long time. There are houndstooth ties in all sizes, but I recommend you get an oversized one. It will look great with solid suits and suits that have a small pattern. If you want a textured tie, go for a houndstooth bourette silk one. Bourette is a thicker silk yarn, very matte and crisp.
Macclesfield Neats Tie
Initially, such ties were printed in Macclesfield, England. Macclesfield ties feature small repetitive patterns, which are not solid, but also not very bold. Therefore, they look great with both suits and casual outfits. The most versatile colours here are navy blue, red, green and brown. Each tie has two, three or even more colours and it is very easy to pair them with many different garments.
Silver Tie
A silver tie is formal and looks great with all kinds of suits, even morning wear. It is a great choice for a wedding, a night out and even for the office. However, always remember that you should pair it with a darker suit or jacket. A silver tie works well with blue, black or grey suits; but very rarely with yellow, brown or red. Silver is a very clean and sleek colour. It is perfect for celebratory events.
Paisley Tie
This pattern came from India and was modified in England. I can say it the most complex pattern and sometimes it might be hard to match such ties with a suit. However, you should have at least one in your collection. Wear it with minimal looking shirts and suits in solid colours that look nice with a tie. If you match colours correctly, your outfit will show your personality and confidence.
Generally, I use silk ties, but in cold winter, I prefer wool or wool and silk blend ties. In Pietrocola Bespoke we can create a unique tie based on your specifications.
