What investment income do you need to retire at 35?

investment income

Do you want to quit your job and never work again? Have you ever wondered how much money do you actually need to quit a job and live by your investment income? So read my article where I explain all calculations!

According to all calculations done, an investor who leaves work at age 35 would need at least $5,225,000 in a taxable investment account on the day they retire. All this to have an annual post-tax income about $100,000.

In other hand we can reduce the target annual income to $65,000, so in that case an investor would need about $2 million less — or $3,250,000 — invested on the day they retire.

What calculations were used to get these numbers?

So there were used a Monte Carlo simulation in order to calculate the starting balance an investor would need to live on either $100,000 a year or $65,000 a year in dividends (fixed income from bond investments) and capital gains (income from equity investments). The calculation were made after paying taxes, and until age 90 of an investor.

In addition, we assumed to hold investments in a taxable investment account, not a retirement account like an IRA or 401(k), because you can't withdraw money from those accounts without penalty before age 59 and a half. We didn’t consider potential Social Security income as it is uncertain.

Asset allocation

Asset allocation means spreading your investments across various asset classes. Broadly speaking, that means a mix of stocks, bonds, and cash or money market securities. Many people recommend to invest 80% of the lump sum in stocks and 20% in bonds, that is so called "aggressive" asset allocation, due to the age of the investor. Allocating your investments among different asset classes is a key strategy to minimize your risk and potentially increase your gains.
