Visa v/s Mastercard: Is there any difference?

Most of the people who have been using a credit card for decades in almost any country across the world would, perhaps, not be aware if there is any real difference between a MasterCard and Visa.

While a large number of people would be having a favorite credit card, many of them often feel tempted to shift to another company offering better deals. It may be worthwhile to know a little more about credit cards. We shall briefly discuss here as to what is the difference between a MasterCard and Visa.

Which of the two is a better option for the consumer?

A majority of credit card users across the world find no real difference between MasterCard and Visa. Both are accepted widely in more than two hundred countries. You may not easily find a location which accepts one of the two but does not accept the other one. It may be of interest to know that neither MasterCard nor Visa issue any credit cards themselves. MasterCard and Visa are both just methods of payment. Both the companies are, however, competitors vying to have maximum reach in the credit card segment.

How do the two operate and what is the difference?

Both MasterCard And Visa depend on banks to issue credit cards using the two payment methods. The rewards, interest rates, annual charges etc. are all fixed by the particular bank. When paying, you are not making any payment to Visa or MasterCard but are paying to your bank.

Visa and MasterCard make money as they charge the retailer who uses their payment method. A Visa issued by one bank will, therefore, be very similar to the one issued by another bank. MasterCard and Visa are also quite competitive in their offerings to various banks.

Differences in high-end reward programs?

MasterCard and Visa have both designed their Platinum cards to offer various concierge and assistance services in addition to exclusive offers to sports events, concerts etc. to consumers and to tempt financial institutions and banks to promote only their product amongst the customers.
