Pavel Durov‘s Telegram Open Network (TON) will shortly have its own operating system -TON OS. Telegram’s Blockchain OS will appear in app stores in the nearest future.
TON OS is expected to be an add-in for devices to support apps based on blockchain, it will be an end-to-end open-source infrastructure that allows developers and users to work with the TON blockchain.
It is expected that the OS will support applications with numerous functions, including transacting various assets as cryptocurrencies.
Who is Pavel Durov?
Pavel Durov is the founder and majority owner of messaging app Telegram Messenger, major encrypted messenger with more than 300 million users worldwide. Now Telegram competes with messaging apps like WhatsApp, owned by Facebook. Telegram has various competitive advantages, like easy to use telegram groups and privacy as Durov refused to hand over the encryption keys to any authority. Telegram positions itself as a global fighter for privacy, opposing major tech giants like Facebook and Google.
Durov also created Vkontakte, Russia's biggest social network; but in 2015 he sold a 12% stake in the social network for an estimated $300 million. Durov left Russia for Dubai after he refused to cooperate with the Russian secret services and provide encrypted data of Vkontakte users.
In 2018 Pavel, with his brother Nikolai Durov, raised $1.7 billion from investors to create TON, a blockchain system based on Telegram.
Telegram’s evolution and its new era
Since 2018 Telegram being formally banned in Russia, the country’s government is now considering lifting the ban. The ban occurred because Telegram refused to hand over the encryption keys to user accounts, and Durov declared the messaging company would prevail free and private. Previously, Iranian authorities similarly tried to block Telegram as the firm refused to shut down some protesting channels.
According to an April 22 report by Russian news agency Kommersant Russian officials have proposed lifting the Telegram ban after the app’s creator Pavel Durov agreed to collaborate with the government officials on tackling coronavirus. The draft bill emphasizes that numerous failed attempts to ban Telegram in Russia have made the government look bad and loose the prestige.
This month, Telegram verified and promoted 17 official news sources about coronavirus, representing the Ministries of Health in 17 countries.
Telegram battle against United States Securities
Despite Telegram’s ongoing legal battle against the United States Securities and Exchange Commission, TON blockchain developers are not going to give up launching TON. Now Telegram is seeking to appeal a U.S. federal court’s
On Jan. 27., the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) fortified its case against Telegram, calling its Gram token less valuable than donuts. It has filed an emergency action to freeze the company’s sale of Gram tokens.
TON Community Foundation spokesperson Fedor Skuratov, has therefore announced:
“The community was ready for this (or another) scenario. We have several options, including the launch of TON by TCF [TON Community Foundation]. I will say more, no one (no one) can prevent the launch of TON by any other entity, person or community, because TON is a decentralized open-source solution. Already, there are two different test networks, and within the community, there is at least one group planning to launch.”
