6 tips on how to choose the right humidor

How to choose a humido

Humidors are essential for all cigar lovers as they help keep cigars in good condition for many years. You can set the right humidity and temperature in your humidor and be sure that freshness and flavor of your cigars will stay the same.

All you need is to choose the decent option of high quality. Today I would like to give you some recommendations and tips on this matter.

Choose the right size

There are many humidors of different shapes and sizes. You should always pick one that can best accommodate all of your cigars. A room humidor is the perfect choice for collectors or distributors. Such models are usually large and the same size as a walk-in closet. If you only have a small collection of cigars, opt for a cabinet or tabletop humidor. You can easily store around 50 cigars in these humidors. Cabinet and tabletop humidors are not only good for keeping your cigars, but also are nice interior objects. When buying a humidor, you should choose a model which will perfectly match the existing furniture in your house.

Your humidor shouldn’t be too small, otherwise you will have to squeeze all of your cigars in and it might spoil their flavor. It shouldn’t be too large as well, in this case cigars will absorb too much humidity, which is also not good for their quality. The best decision here is to buy a humidor that is slightly bigger than you need, so you can add a few more cigars to your collection any time you want.

Thermometer and hygrometer

How to choose a humidor

Here you have two options: you can buy a humidor which already has both accessories inside or you can buy them separately. As many of you know, a thermometer measures temperature and a hygrometer measures the level of humidity. Both of them are important to maintain the quality of your cigars.

You should always choose a humidor which already has these accessories built into it, even if it is a little more expensive. It will be more comfortable for you and you can be sure your collection won’t be ruined.

Consider portability

If you travel a lot like me, you should buy a portable humidor. I am a huge fan of cigars and take my humidor wherever I go. I also use a Boveda bag to keep the required level of humidity even during a transportation. You can also buy such humidor if your collection is very small. It is very lightweight, small, budget-friendly and can be easily carried everywhere. Usually, in portable humidors you can store around 20 cigars. Even if you already have a full-size humidor, this option also might be useful for you.

Choose a proper wood type

Generally, the best humidors are made of Spanish cedar, which is the perfect wood type for keeping the humidity. Though, they might be also constructed from other wood types, such as oak, mahogany, maple, cherry wood.

Spanish cedar is the best and the most expensive choice. Mahogany is good as well, but Spanish cedar offers more protection from worms and tobacco beetles. Always remember that the humidor’s ability to maintain the temperature and humidity directly depends on the wood type.

Make sure a humidor has a tight seal

How to choose a humidor

One more very crucial thing in a humidor. Even if you buy the best humidor, it won’t be that good if the seal is not tight, it won’t insulate properly. Before buying a humidor, you can do a couple of tests. Open and close a humidor, it should make a special “whoosh” sound. If it does, that means the seal is tight. You can also put a bill at the front of the box and close it. Then try to pull it out, if you can do it easily, then the seal is not good.

Know how to spot a poor-quality humidor

There are so many cheap humidors in stores and online shops. Most of them will only last for a couple of months, while proper humidors are constructed to last for years. If the price is too low, this humidor is probably fake and unreliable. The best humidors are generally made of Spanish cedar along with other materials and can’t be cheap. Always check reviews and feedback, when you place an online order. Avoid cheap humidors because such models might even damage your cigars.

All the small details in a humidor matter, all of them must have no defects. Everything should be perfect — the lid, the seal, wood, hinges. Even if one part of a humidor is not good, the whole item won’t work properly. Examine it very carefully before purchasing.

You should invest into your humidor. Better spend a little more money on an expensive high-quality model, which will last for a very long time.
